Overview

The works of the Human-systems Interaction and Simulation (HIS) Laboratory focus on studying the performance, safety, and health of people, by applying human factors principles to enhance their interactions with organizations, tasks, technology/tools, environment and systems in general.

Below are some major research projects of the research team:

  • Typographical methods assessment that render the differing portions of look-alike drug names more salient and visually distinct could improve the accuracy of the differentiation
  • Evaluating the usability and design deficiencies of infusion pumps for safety and quality of care
  • Computer-based self-management system and disease self-management behavior and outcomes of patients with chronic illnesses through randomized controlled trials
  • Electronic Medical Records implementation in private clinics in Hong Kong and care providers’ perceptions of the implementation and technology
  • Testing one-handed static pulling strength of Chinese

Facilities

daseCAVE (formerly imseCAVE)

The daseCAVE have been deployed in the simulation of port container terminals to conduct research and projects in logistics engineering.

The Tower Crane Simulator @daseCAVE can nurture public knowledge in operating a crane while they are enjoying this interactive design.

This fully immersive and interactive visualization system can also be used in many other fields such as education. It can be used for training and skills evaluation.

 

The daseCAVE is a fully immersive and interactive visualization system that provides extremely vivid stereoscopic views of sceneries in 3-D designed and developed by the research team in the Department. The system is developed based on the technologies of distributed and interactive virtual reality, with real-time motion capture capability.

 

The daseCAVE is a low cost, high performance generic Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) system that is versatile and powerful for cost effective design, analysis and evaluation of complex engineering systems and operations; e-training and e-learning. In practice, the system can be readily configured quickly to provide immersive virtual environment for users to obtain firsthand experience of such environment without the limitations of time and space. The system can also be used for training and skill evaluation, a tool for complex system analysis and design such as in the development of products, buildings, and other facilities. In addition, user interfaces such as data gloves, trackers, joysticks, motion platform can be readily connected to the daseCAVE for enhanced immersiveness and interactivity of the virtual environment.

 

We have deployed the daseCAVE in the simulation of very large and complex logistics systems including the automated air cargo terminals and port container terminals. Such simulations provide a means for management, engineers and users to study their operations without the need to physically disturbing the normal operation of these facilities. More importantly, experiments can be performed on the virtual simulation systems whereby operation and design parameters can be investigated in a safe and controlled environment.

MagicPad - the 3D Tangible User Interface

With the use of MagicPad, one can perform various interactive visualization in three dimensions.

A tangible user interface framework, namely the MagicPad, inspired by the concept of Spatial Augmented Reality, has been developed and deployed to the daseCAVE. By using an Infrared pen with any flat surface, such as a piece of paper that receives projected images from a projector, a user is able to perform a variety of interactive visualization and manipulation in the 3D space.
