Smart Manufacturing: Connected, Contemplative and Cognitive

Abstract

Smart Manufacturing is a term that has been used for a few decades with various connotations to refer to manufacturing systems that set themselves apart from traditional systems. In this talk, Dr Nassehi, will draw upon his experience in interoperability and artificial intelligence in manufacturing and combine it with emerging data-driven methods to articulate a framework for the future evolution of manufacturing systems. He will propose ideas about learning from simulation in factories, distributed planning and control, early introduction of digital twins in product and process development and transdisciplinary design within this framework.

Short Bio

Dr. Aydin Nassehi is the Head of Department and a Reader in manufacturing systems in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Bristol (UK). He is an Associate Member of the International Academy of Production Engineers (CIRP) and the secretary for CIRP UK. He received his PhD in Innovative Manufacturing Technology in 2007 followed by an MSc with distinction in Software engineering. His research interests are in informatics and artificial intelligence in manufacturing.
