Our speaker Prof. Shuo-Yan Chou would like to share with us on “ From Industry 4.0 to the Fourth Industrial Revolution" :

Industry 4.0 is the vision of future manufacturing established by the German government and is perceived as a likely pathway to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. While information technologies and electronics paved the foundation leading to the Third Industrial Revolution, the Fourth Industrial Revolution seems to be imminent with rapid advancement of Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) as well as other exponential technologies. IoT enables the communication and cooperation and subsequent synergy among biological, physical and digital entities. That is, by connecting biological and physical entities online, previously elusive phenomena and behaviors can now be captured to create innovative and effective services, which in return empower entities in the physical world at an exponential pace. The core technology of Industry, Cyber Physical Systems, a more focused notion of IoT, further facilitate a framework where connected machines can communicate and coordinate and thereby create an environment that is more agile and flexible and capable of facing more complex manufacturing requirement. In such a system, the key enabler is not machines but software and algorithms which create functions and intelligence to facilitate innovative services and business models. The same system framework is applicable in many other service sectors and will have impact not only the industry but also in the the society as a whole. Innovative business models such as uber and airbnb for shared economy have sipping into our socio-economic system. A new economy is in the forming. In this talk, evolving services, business models, economic systems and subsequent impact from IoT will be presented.
