Title: “Novel cell transmission models for urban transportation network ”

Abstract:

Traffic modelling methods are important for urban transportation network, as they are the basis of wide range of studies on transportation design, control and optimization. Generally, there are two categories of modelling methods, i.e., macroscopic and microscopic methods. The macroscopic models focus on systematic properties with traffic flow theories and ignore the microscopic features; the microscopic models, on the contrary, focus on individual behaviors without systematic information and thus are time consuming. To keep a balance between these two types of models, some so-called mesoscopic models were proposed, and cell transmission model (CTM) is a typical one, which can capture the dynamic characteristics in traffic evolution in an efficient way. However, the original CTM aims at highway network, and cannot be applied to urban network. In this work, two novel CTMs will be developed with consideration of the characteristics of urban networks; in particular, the first model is designed for small area urban network with local traffic information and the second is designed for large area urban network by integrating both local traffic condition and global information. Then, the novel CMTs will be employed to different topics on urban transportation network, including (1) critical link analysis for urban network; (2) robustness assessment for urban network; and (3) resilient analysis for urban network. The preliminary results show the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed methods.
