Assessing the Use of Virtual Reality in Upper Limb Motor Rehabilitation of Daily Living Activities among Post-stroke Patient

Abstract

Background: Stroke is a significant public health issue in Hong Kong. Upper limb motor impairment is one of the most common symptoms after stroke, which would greatly limit the daily activities of post-stroke patients. The development of virtual reality (VR) has demonstrated potential in post-stroke motor rehabilitation training.

Objective: This study is proposed to assess the use of a non-immersive VR rehabilitation system (Kinect-based) and an immersive VR rehabilitation system (head-mounted display-based) for upper limb motor rehabilitation in basic daily activities by post-stroke patients with different severity levels and ages. The effects of VR type, severity level of stroke, and age on upper limb motor rehabilitation will be examined. 

Method: A four-way, mixed factorial design will be conducted. Task completion time, range of motion, muscle activation level, upper extremity ability, and the subjective feelings of using the VR rehabilitation system will be measured.

Discussion: This study will help to better understand how post-stroke patients interact with virtual objects. In addition, this study will help to extend the application of VR in medical treatment. Furthermore, the design of the VR rehabilitation system will provide implications for motor rehabilitation training therapy.
